What’s Fall Like in the Metaverse?

October 20, 2023No Comments2 Mins Read

TL; DR

  • We may be about to enter an era of seasonal ‘digital destinations’ that will power a whole new kind of virtual economy.

  • The Web3 game, Voxiesjust announced ‘Fear night‘ a four-week initiative around a Halloween theme.

  • And whether you’re talking about digital or physical destinations – when a group of people come together in a specific area for an extended period of time: There’s money to be made baaaaby!

  • Here’s how the model works (in theory): Create limited-time cards (to bring people in) → hide a series of limited edition items on the card → earn royalties (in perpetuity) every time someone sells a rare seasonal collectible.

Full story

Digital events are almost always about sales:

  • Black Friday

  • Back to school

  • End of fiscal year

…but we may be about to enter an era of seasonal ‘digital destinations’ that will power a whole new kind of virtual economy.

Sounds strange, but hear us out!

The Web3 game, Voxiesjust announced ‘Fear night‘ a four-week initiative around a Halloween theme.

(The idea is for players to show up and explore limited-time maps while collecting limited-edition items).

Which, depending on whether you’re a gamer or not, could be neither here nor there.

But the point is this: Voxies has essentially created a seasonal destination, within a 3D virtual world.

And whether you’re talking about digital or physical destinations – when a group of people come together in a specific area for an extended period of time:

There’s money to be made baaaaby!

Take Ocean City, New Jersey, for example. The city has about 11-12,000 inhabitants in the winter, and in the summer the number of inhabitants rises to over 120,000 inhabitants.

(That’s a cool 10x, all thanks to a little sunshine).

And with that change comes the bulk of the city’s revenue:

Paid access to the beach (via beach labels) and parking brings the city a cool $7 million each summer, which amounts to almost 10% of the city’s annual budget.

What will seasonal monetization look like in the metaverse? No idea!

But if we had to start somewhere, we’d probably follow in Voxies’ footsteps:

Create limited-time maps (to bring people in) → hide a series of limited edition items on the map → earn royalties (forever) every time someone sells a rare seasonal collectible.

Smart!
