New Blog Post From Vitalik Just Dropped! Here’s What It Means…

TL; DR

  • When ETH Daddy writes, he has a habit of getting quite technical. So here’s an overview of what Vitalik is thinking about this post.

  • In his blog post, Vitalik essentially asks the following question: “What if we added some of this functionality to the base Ethereum protocol by default?”

  • Vitalik essentially gets the ball rolling on development by asking the Ethereum community what features should/should not be added.

Full story

Okay, so ETH daddy (Vitalik Buterine) just posted a new blog post – and when he speaks, people usually listen.

The only problem is…

When ETH Daddy writes, he has a habit of getting quite technical.

So here’s an overview of what Vitalik is thinking about this post.

First of all, if you can do us a favor…

Imagine if Steve Jobs had one slit throat minimalistic. So much so that when he debuted the iPhone, the only app/feature it had was the ability to make calls. No SMS, no contact lists, no Settings app – Certainly no calculator.

Instead, imagine that he wanted all these functions and features to be created and delivered by third-party developers, via the App Store.

That’s pretty much how Vitalik envisioned the modern version of Ethereum. A super minimalist, stripped-down code base that only did one thing:

Process simple cryptocurrency transactions.

Everything else, like features that reduce costs, speed up transactions, make crypto wallets function more like simple Web2 applications…

All of these features are built as separate add-ons, like apps on an iPhone.

And like apps, they can plug into the base Ethereum protocol (operating system) if necessary, but they don’t install right out of the box.

In his blog post, Vitalik essentially asks the following question:

“What if we added some of this functionality to the base Ethereum protocol by default?”

That feels like a bit of a disappointment, right? A six thousand word essay that asks a question without giving a clear answer.

But here’s the trick to it all…

Vitalik essentially gets the ball rolling on development by asking the Ethereum community what features should/should not be added.

(Because the Ethereum community are the ones who have to decide on any changes first and then build them all).

Would things go faster if there were a central decision maker? Absolute.

But when building decentralized systems you don’t have that blessing/curse.
