Telegram deletes Ethereum engineer’s account after hack

May 15, 2026No Comments3 Mins Read

A recent account deletion incident on Telegram has sparked heated debate within the cryptocurrency community. Well-known Ethereum engineer Dominik Clemente’s account was permanently erased by the Telegram support team after it was compromised by malicious actors, with no possibility to recover the data. This event has once again ignited criticism over Telegram’s perceived lack of protection for independent developers.

Are independent developers at risk?

Mert Mumtaz, CEO of Helius, pointed to this incident as a wake-up call, urging the crypto and developer communities to fundamentally reassess their reliance on Telegram. Mumtaz argued that Telegram can no longer meet the core needs of the Web3 industry and is at a critical impasse. Helius, which stands out for its work in providing blockchain infrastructure services on the Solana network, is known for supporting developers with technical solutions. Both Mumtaz and dcbuilder.eth, who was directly affected by the incident, highlighted that robust support and account security on the platform are only granted to large institutional partners.

Independent developers, on the other hand, find themselves at the mercy of automated account deletion systems in the event of phishing attacks or breaches. This often results in the sudden and permanent loss of long-standing projects, networks, and essential communication channels built over the years.

Web3 and blockchain community expresses concern

Under the leadership of founder Pavel Durov, Telegram has sought to position itself as the leading Web3 messaging platform with its native blockchain ecosystem, TON. Nevertheless, recent discussions among tech experts active in ecosystems such as Solana and Zcash have raised concerns that Telegram’s security measures are insufficient and may expose users to significant risks.

Several experts have argued that when effective support and security become privileges reserved for larger organizations, rather than the whole community, it undermines trust in the sector in a profound way.

The ease with which accounts can be deleted or become unrecoverable is also fueling long-term concerns about data protection across the blockchain sphere. Telegram’s current account management policies are prompting many entrepreneurs and independent developers to rethink their engagement with the platform.

Platform choices and the debate over the future

Messaging platforms are crucial in the technology world, especially for crypto and Web3 projects. As a result of Telegram’s current policies, some project teams have started exploring alternative communication channels. According to some experts, unless high standards of user security are enforced, decentralized projects may lose interest in Telegram altogether.

The incident has also triggered ongoing debates across social media and developer communities. The broader community is demanding a more transparent and comprehensive security approach from Telegram to avoid repeated incidents. The difference in support between corporate users and independent developers continues to fuel anxieties about the platform’s future.
