Fraudsters Target Desperate Football Fans
Lloyds stated that football scams now represent nearly one-third of all ticket fraud cases tracked by the bank. Victims lost an average of £215 per incident, although several supporters reportedly lost much larger sums. Consequently, consumer protection groups have increased warnings around unofficial ticket sales.
Scammers often advertise fake tickets on social media platforms before shifting conversations to private messaging apps. They usually pressure buyers into making direct bank transfers.

Demand for World Cup tickets has created ideal conditions for criminal activity. FIFA reportedly received more than 500 million ticket requests for the 2026 tournament. Significantly, premium Category 1 seats for the final at MetLife Stadium reached nearly $33,000. Those prices greatly exceeded previous World Cup records.
