Chainalysis Reports Highlights the Evolution of Illicit Activities in the Darknet Market

February 21, 2026No Comments3 Mins Read

The Chainalysis 2026 crypto crime report reveals a resilient darknet market activity, underscoring the persistence of the crypto-enabled drug market, despite repeated enforcement actions.

Darknet Market Flows Maintain a Steady Rise

Details of the report show that darknet market flows reached nearly $2.6 billion in 2025, reflecting a continuous rise in volume since 2022, after the metric dropped to around $2 billion from over $3 billion in the previous year.

In the meantime, despite the surge in darknet market transaction volume, on-chain fentanyl-related flows experienced a sharp decline. Chainalysis report reveals that after peaking in 2023, deaths from fentanyl overdoses in the US dropped dramatically. Notably, the drop is a consequence of improved collaboration between the US and China, which led the latter to take direct action on online fentanyl precursor vendors, disrupting supply at the source.

Blockchain is a Crucial Tool for Tracking Processes

Once more, the alignment between on-chain data and the drop in opioid deaths highlights the significance of blockchain technology as a tool for measuring strategic and operational impact in the mainstream sector. It also confirms the potential role of blockchain solutions as a crucial tool in the health sector.

Notably, blockchain is the underlying technology that underpins cryptocurrency infrastructure. Meanwhile, darknet markets, mainly powered by crypto transactions, run on top of blockchain networks worldwide. Therefore, embracing blockchain tracking could be the most significant move for the government in the current dispensation to curb illicit transactions and illegal activities across different sectors.

Bad Actors Always Try to Beat the System

In the meantime, Chainalysis further reported a year-on-year decline in fraud shop activity, driven by increased use of custodial merchant services. Meanwhile, Chinese language fraud shops appear to be consolidating into higher-value, wholesale-focused operations.

Despite the successes recorded, particularly in disrupting fentanyl supply, Chainalysis warns against a potential setback as long as demand persists, and synthetic drug manufacturing remains a profitable alternative to agriculturally cultivated substances like heroin. The blockchain investigation platform highlighted the possibility of trafficking organizations to adapt to supply shocks and find ways to work around the system.
