Bill Gates is selling billions of dollars worth of stock in the company he co-founded, Microsoft (MSFT), while trimming a significant portion of his stake in Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway (BRK-B).
The Gates Foundation Trust’s 13F filing shows that Gates sold 1,500,000 shares of MSFT, worth $1.04 billion, in the fourth quarter of 2025.
The move cropped The foundation’s Microsoft holdings rose from 9,191,207 shares in the third quarter to 7,691,207 in the following quarter, a decline of 16%. As of December 31, the Gates Foundation Trust’s MSFT ownership is $3.719 billion.
The foundation also dumped $1.187 billion worth of Berkshire Hathaway stock in the fourth quarter, reducing its position by 2,358,460 BRK-B shares. At the end of the fourth quarter of 2025, the Gates Foundation Trust owns 19,406,764 BRK-B shares worth $9.754 billion.
Besides selling portions of its shares in MSFT and BRK-B, the Gates Foundation Trust has not divested any other holdings. It also hasn’t built or increased any of its existing positions.
Looking at the foundation’s portfolio, Berkshire Hathaway remains at the top, even after the massive sell-off. bookkeeping for 27.59% of his total holdings. At number two is the environmental service provider Waste Management (WM), which allocates 17.98% of its portfolio to WM. Other major holdings in the foundation’s portfolio include Canadian National Railway Company (CNR.TO), Microsoft and Caterpillar (CAT) with 14.49%, 10.52% and 10.29% respectively.
The Gates Foundation Trust currently oversees more than $35 billion in securities.
