Atlantic Constellation brings Portugal and Japan closer to strengthen response to extreme weather and disaster management

MATOSINHOS, Portugal, July 9, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Portugal continues its collaboration with Japa in the space sector, although a pate ship was launched at SPACETIDE 2026, taking place this week in Tokyo. The coope atio is built on the Atla tic Co stellatio, the flagship of the potential strategic space led by CEiiA and the Portuguese Ai Fo ce. It will strengthen the country’s capabilities to deal with extreme weather events (such as forest fires) and disaster response, while promoting business development between Europe and the Asia-Pacific region.

The era takes the form of a city memo between New Space Alliances and SPACETIDE, a eut al hub for Japan’s space in the dust. New Space Allia ces is the platform led by CEiiA and the Portuguese Ai Fo ce that emerged from the Atla tic Co stellatio and the Atla tic Data Hub. The MoU establishes a collaboration to develop space-based solutions for mo ito igad management of extreme climate events, chosen by the c eatio of a Space Hub in Japan.

For Europe, the pate ship concentrates the strategic value of a sovereign technology capable of anticipating and responding to climate disasters. By strengthening the use of terrestrial observation data and digital platforms, the Atlantic Costellatio supports a wide range of decisions on natural disasters, civil protection, security and te ito ial esilie.

With this signature, Japa joins the pair as its 4th Space Hub, after Guima and Oei as (Po tugal) in 2025 and Amazonia (Brazil) in Ja ua 2026. The Space Hubs are regional ecosystems that together develop the science, technology and activities to build local solutions to climate advertising sustainability challenges.

“This MoU is known as a partnership between two organizations. It is a static proposal with Japan to develop space solutions capable of meeting global challenges. As extreme climate phenomena have a ticipatio ad espo se, i te atiole cooperation becomes crucial to focus space technology on the economic and social impact,” said Emi Si age, head of space at CEiiA, epic New Space Alliances.

“Japa and Po tugal are facing the common challenges and have very complete capabilities. This pate ship will appeal to large companies while being close to each other,” said Façois Poci, COO of SPACETIDE. The MoU was signed by Masayasu Ichida, CEO of SPACETIDE.
