In progress FTX Fraud TrialAn email correspondence has surfaced that sheds light on the relationship between FTX’s founder Sam Bankman-Fried and Bahamian government officials.
FTX’s ties to Bahamian officials
This is evident from an email that was presented as evidence in court Bahamian Prime Minister Philip Davis had approached Sam Bankman-Fried to ask his son for advice on an NFT project. Notably, the email was sent from an address associated with Prime Minister Davis. In response, Bankman-Fried expressed his willingness to engage in conversation, either over the phone or via a Zoom call.
FTX’s base in the Bahamas was reportedly active without a valid license over two years. This detail has raised questions about the level of supervision and regulatory environment in the Bahamas, especially regarding cryptocurrency ventures. The Bahamian government has been criticized in the past for its perceived lenient stance on regulating crypto companies.

In a move that appears to allay concerns regarding cryptocurrency regulation, the Securities Commission of the Bahamas (SCB) announced in April that it would implement stricter rules for digital asset exchanges. This decision could be a response to increasing scrutiny and the need for a robust regulatory framework to govern the fast-growing crypto sector in the country.
Implications for American research
The aforementioned email correspondence also played a role in a separate investigation led by U.S. Attorney Danielle Kudla. The email was used to verify Bankman-Fried’s phone number during the investigation. While the full extent and nature of the US investigation remain unclear, the existence of the email and its contents have added a new layer to the unfolding story.
The rise of email correspondence has brought the relationship between FTX’s founder and Bahamian government officials to the fore. As the crypto industry continues to develop and expand, the importance of clear and strict regulatory frameworks becomes paramount. The Bahamas, which is a hub for many crypto ventures, will undoubtedly be at the forefront of these discussions and developments.
