The crypto and NFT The gaming space has been busier than ever lately, with prominent games starting to be released, token airdrops piling up, and a seemingly constant array of other things happening at all times. There’s a lot involved!
Happy, Declutter‘s GG is completely over it. And if you want to quickly keep up to date with the latest developments in crypto video games, we are happy to present this week in Crypto Games.
Our weekend roundup offers the biggest news from the past week, along with a few other tidbits you might have missed. We’ll also be featuring some of our original stories of the week.
Biggest news
TikTok airdrop: Sonic SVM, a layer 2 gaming chain built on top of Solana, launched its SONIC token on Tuesday. The token peaked at one Market capitalization of $443 million but has since fallen to $277 million. This allowed players of the project’s TikTok tap-to-earn game Sonic January 30.
The game followed the simple tapping premise that most games within the genre follow, but innovated by launching the game via TikTok instead of Telegram. This allowed the project to reach over 2 million players, which turned out to be a success, according to Sonic SVM. Now Sonic SVM is looking to bring third-party projects on board to follow in its footsteps.
Call of Duty meme coin: 360noscope420blazeit (MLG) shot up 5,200% in just six days thanks to Call of Duty themed nostalgia. The Solana meme coin harkens back to Call of Duty’s perceived golden age – before ‘omnimovement’ and overly complex killstreaks, or the flood of microtransactions and crazy skins. It’s not just about the atmosphere either: they’ve launched custom online servers for classic Call of Duty games to attract a community of crypto gamers.
This approach quickly attracted a cult-like following, but when members of the iconic esports team FaZe Clan started paying for the token, things went parabolic. Richard “FaZe Banks” Bengtson believed in the token so much that he even got a tattoo of the original MLG logo, i.e. Major League Gaming, an organization that was central to Call of Duty’s esports scene.
The MLG token is of course not an official offering from tournament organizer Activision, but that hasn’t stopped it from making monster winnings. MLG has peaked at a price of almost $0.178 at the time of writing, reaching a peak market cap of around $177 million on Saturday. Since then it has fallen by almost 30%.
The Machines Arena on Steam and PS5: Ethereum hero shooter The Machine Arena– which runs on gaming network Ronin – is coming to new platforms and will appear on leading PC marketplace Steam and the PlayStation 5 console. However, because both platforms have restrictive crypto policies, those versions of the game will have no or possibly limited crypto features.
On Steam there will be absolutely no crypto features. However, for the PlayStation 5 editionsaid Directive Games Design Manager David Gracia Declutter the company is still in discussions with Sony on how to implement crypto elements. This is something to keep an eye on, as we have yet to see a game successfully implement live crypto features on PlayStation (Off the Grid, in early access, has a testnest blockchain on the back end, but no current player targeted on-chain properties).
