When the Swedish UFO film “Watch the Skies” comes to the US in May, the public cannot see that it was not made in English.
The film is the first full theatrical release to present the “visual dubbing” technology of AI Firm Flawless, so that the performances of actors can be digitally lip -synchronized with strange dubs.
“Watch the Skies” follows rebellious Teen Denise, who collaborates with a club of UFO Watchers to resolve the mystery of her missing father. The film was recorded in Swedish and released there under the title “Ufo Sweden.” For its American release, however, the original cast has included their versions in English, with flawless use of its Truesync Machine Learning technology to digitally change their lip movements, so that they synchronize with the English dialogue.
“Flawless and their technology gives us the opportunity to release the film for a much larger audience,” said writer-director Victor Danell in a performance.
The filmmakers emphasize that the use of the technology has ‘full approval of SAG’, the actor union, which in 2023 went on strike in the midst of concern about the ‘threat’ of AI for the profession.
“Many filmmakers and many actors will be afraid of this technology in the beginning, but we have the creative control, and to act in English was a real exciting experience,” Danell said, adding that: “It is still our film, it is still the performance of the actors, and that is the most important part.”
What is Truesync?
In a presentation from 2023, Flawless co-founder Scott Mann explained that the company’s treesync technology deeply uses deep learning to create a volumetric 3D representation of the faces of the actors in a film, which can then be changed to appropriate the re-synchronized dialogue.
Truesync was previously used on the film “Fall” from 2022 to remove curses for a PG-13 processing, while another products from the company, Depeditor, makes it possible to get the performance of an actor from one scene and to be applied to another, without the need for Herschoten.
The company works together with distributor XYZ films to release a series of functions that are located with Truesync, including “Run Lola Run” director Tom Tykwer’s emerging “The Light”, horror function “Vincent Must Die” and South Korean film “Smugglers”.
