A South Korean wife in the forty was sentenced to two years in prison for transferring $ 500,000 to crypto and cash from her friend’s accounts while he slept.
The woman from in forty, only identified as ‘A’, was convicted on 15 May of embezzlement and fraud for moving $ 488,000, 683 million won, in Crypto of her partner’s wallet to her own on January 5.
She also stole his mobile phone and an extra $ 1,430, about 2 million won, in cash while he slept, so that the total trek at around $ 489,000 or 685 million was won, according to a local media report.
Although the woman admitted to all charges at the court of Jeju, her legal team claimed that the actual loss was only (21.9 million won) $ 15,600 because most funds had since been returned.
However, the court found little reason to clementia.
“The total amount of damage is great,” the judge ruled and noted that the suspect had two previous fraud distributions and was a new fraud case at the time of the theft.
The conviction contributes to a disturbing increase in crypto-related crimes in Jeju and worldwide, because peer-to-peer transactions are increasingly leading to theft, abuse and even murder.
In February, a man from thirty found was stabbed to death in a Jeju -Hotel after he had traveled there for a private -crypto exchange.
Four Chinese nationals were arrested after they reportedly won his flight with $ 63,000, or 85 million, in stolen funds. Weeks later, six Chinese nationals were held on the island for stealing $ 610,000, or 840 million, in digital assets of two other traders after a violent fight.
The same month, in Florida, 22-year-old Maissa Jebali is said to have stolen $ 850,000 on Trump theme Meme coins of her ex-boyfriend after a fight on board his yacht. She is now confronted with large theft costs and possible deportation.
