Ai Voice Cloning’s “Legal Gray Zone”
The use of AI to simulate the voice of Melania Trump emphasizes the technical and legal considerations of AI Voice Cloning, DhruPad Das, Web3 Attorney and founder at Panda Law, told Decrypt.
Das said that although text-to-speech (TTS) technology is widely used and becomes legally non-contact when it comes to generic story, the cloning of the voice of a public figure introduces risk.
Although Trump has given a permit for the rights to use its voice for Elflabs, DAS noted that “there is a legal gray zone when AI mimics celebrities or political leaders, especially if their personality rights do not have an explicit license.”
“The moment you use a recognizable voice, you enter legal territory, even if the data came from public sources,” Das noted.
The lawyer added that the AI technology behind celebrities stories can also be used to help scales education, accessibility or government services.
Melania Trump and the “Take It Down Act”
The AudioBoek of Melania Trump runs for a little more than seven hours and joins the growing catalog of Eleven Reader of AI-Verhulde Werken, including publications of figures such as Maya Angelou, Deepak Chopra and Arianna Huffington.
Trump’s public revival only comes in the White House a few days after her appearance for the signing of the “Take It Down Act”, a new law that criminalizes the online publication of non-consensual images, including AI generated Deepfakes and mandates granted by platforms within 48 hours.
“This legislation is a powerful step forward in our efforts to ensure that every American, especially young people, can feel better protected against their image or identity that is being abused,” said Melania Trump at the signing.
