In short
- Dimitri “Capybara Stocks” Semenikhin has emerged as the leader of the Beyond Meat meme stock movement, much like Roaring Kitty during the GameStop craze.
- Semenikhin is a 28-year-old Russian man who lives in Dubai and works for his family’s real estate development company.
- He started posting on Reddit under the pseudonym Capybara Stocks as a trading exercise, and said the attention surrounding his BYND bet has become overwhelming.
Capybara Stocks started posting his stock picks on Reddit as an exercise in understanding his own trading methods — and creating a way for others to tell him he was wrong.
Now many more people think he has the right idea. Last week, the trader posted about his $3 million gamble Beyond meatthe stock skyrocketed, and suddenly random people on the internet started considering him a thought leader.
Beyond the Wave of Meat and the role of Capybara Stocks are very reminiscent of 2021 GameStop craze And Keith “Roaring Kitty” Gill crowned leader of the movement. Capybara Stocks is aware of this circulating comparison, but pushed back, calling it “ridiculous,” as Gill may be the godfather of the whole meme stock trend.
That said, the Beyond Meat bull admitted that the attention on him became overwhelming.
“I tried to reply to everyone. In the beginning there were dozens of messages, and it was possible to do that at the same time as my main job,” he said Declutter. But once it became “100 messages per hour,” he had to give it up.
“It is impossible to answer everyone and do something different,” he said. “You feel a sense of responsibility for those people, because for some reason they decided to invest based on what I say. It seems very strange to me.”
In the real world, Capybara Stocks is known as Dimitri Semenikhin, the son of two well-known ones Russian art collectors. The 28-year-old currently lives in Dubai and works for his family’s real estate development company. He was born in Russia but grew up in Monaco after moving there early in his life – during which time his father served as the Honorary Consul of Kazakhstan in Monaco. Semenikhin said his first job was as science fiction writer before founding a number of startups, which he sold before moving into real estate.
Ironically, Semenikhin is not vegan, but he said he tried Beyond Meat products during the Covid-19 pandemic simply out of curiosity. He said it was “interesting to try,” and thinks the taste is “pretty good,” although as a meat eater he prefers the real thing.
For the past five years, Semenikhin has invested in individual stocks. In fact, he said Declutter that Beyond Meat isn’t even his best subject. Instead, he claims to have made more money from the Ethereum treasury company SharpLink Gamingbuying shares for $8 and selling them for about $35, a return of 335%.
“I did all those positions exactly the same as at BYND: I took the position and made publications on Reddit, in which I explained my thesis,” Semenikhin explained. “It’s surprising that in this case, instead of being told I was wrong, this happened.”
Semenikhin told it Declutter on Thursday its initial investment in Beyond Meat was $3 million, which has increased to $10 million. That’s a 233% return despite BYND experiencing a run-up of over 1,000% as he said he sold his position throughout the rise. That said, knowing the potential wins he’s missed has made him feel “pretty bad about himself.”
He told it Declutter that he made $9 million in profits and left $1 million behind, partly because he feels responsible to the community he inadvertently created. Declutter asked for screenshots to verify Semenikhin’s claims, but he did not provide any verification.
“The plan is actually to keep the $1 million invested for the long term, because I think I would feel guilty if I sold my Beyond Meat shares,” Semenikhin explains. “Maybe it will go away and everyone will come out, and then I’ll feel a little bit liberated from this — because I feel a little bit hostage to the new responsibility of answering all these people about their Beyond Meat investments.”
In an effort to move beyond his ties to Beyond Meat, Semenikhin has publicly announced his investment in Ethereum treasury company ETHZilla. 20 minute YouTube video explain his thesis.
Shares of ETHZilla rose on Friday following the release of the video.
