The Western Wall
TAMPA, Fla.—People of October 7, a storytelling initiative led by Tampa student journalist Abraham Albadawi, aims to spread awareness of the stories of those affected by the tragic events of October 7 in Israel. Through this project, Albadawi aims to amplify the voices of survivors, giving hope to those who want to be heard.
Albadawi was motivated to start this initiative after feeling a deep connection with the survivors while watching news reports about the attacks. His involvement began with social media outreach efforts, which led to a pivotal interview with Ofri Reiner, a survivor of the Nova Festival massacre. Her story and others collected since have formed the backbone of his project.
Facing challenges from Florida’s unpredictable hurricane season, Abraham Albadawi has relentlessly continued his mission to amplify the stories of October 7 survivors. His dedication has allowed him to share their experiences with friends, family members, professors and wider audiences.
“Balancing a six-course college schedule while coordinating interviews across different time zones has been a test of my dedication and time management skills,” Albadawi explained. He has navigated significant hurdles, including a 7-hour time difference and language and cultural barriers, which have compounded the complexity of his task.
“These logistical challenges often mean I’m communicating or doing interviews at night or early in the morning, which can be tiring. But hearing the survivors share their stories makes it all worthwhile,” Albadawi said. The need for translations to ensure accurate communication has also been crucial, bridging the gaps created by language and cultural differences.
Despite these obstacles, Albadawi’s commitment remains unwavering. “Every piece shared is a reminder of why this project is so vital. It’s not just about recording history; It’s about understanding the human impact of these events and honoring those who lived through them,” he reflected. His dedication is driven by the profound impact and importance of bringing these human stories to the forefront so they are heard and remembered.
The community response has been overwhelmingly positive and highlights the public’s interest in gaining a more nuanced understanding of these events.
