In short
- The Meta AI app is now available on iOS, Android and Desktop, powered by the Open-source Llama 4 model.
- Users can generate images, switch between voices of celebrities and connect the app to meta smart glasses.
- With the Discovery tab, users can view, share and enter into AI-generated content of other users.
Meta launched a stand-alone app for his Meta AI assistant and marked an important step in bringing its generative AI tools, powered by the Open-source Lama AI models, to users outside of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp.
The new Meta AI app arrives almost two years after the company started its large AI -Integration -Push in December 2023, in which generative AI was included in its social media and communication platforms.
Meta catches up on OpenAI, Google and Elon Musk’s Xai and others who have already launched independent apps for their AI models.
Despite the fact that 7.5 billion monthly active users has on his social media platforms, Meta faces an important challenge if it wants to match its rivals. Chatgpt alone had 600 million monthly active users in iOS, Android and Desktop applications.
I spent some time with the new Meta AI app, available on iOS, Android and Internet. It offers a handful of good functions, such as High-Definition image and video generation, adaptable AI voices and a discovery tab to see how others use it.
There is also integration with the smart glasses from Meta. Even with these highlights, however, the app still has some rough spots that need improvement.
First look
For this review I used the iOS version of the Meta AI app. It requires users to register with a Facebook or Instagram account, or with an e -mail address linked to other Meta accounts. Once logged in, the Tutorials destination page offers about the use of AI, exploring functions and launching simple projects.
A new function of Meta AI is the Discovery tab, which shows what other users make with the app. The Discovery tab is more than a gallery-it also serves as a social media hub, allowing users to like, respond, respond and share AI-generated content on meta-platforms.
Although I don’t mind sharing my creations online, I didn’t like how Meta Ai shares images, because it does this without first getting the user’s permission. Users can share to Facebook and disable Instagram in their settings under Data & Privacy, but this is enabled by default.
Meta AI can make both stationary images and short video clips, one of my favorite aspects of Meta AI. The EMU image generator of Meta is very good at making lively, high-definition images that can be animated in clips by adding the word “video” to the prompt. Image generation is fast.
I was surprised to discover that the AI had no problem making images of Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman and John Constantine without much hassle.

Once made, these images can be shared together with their prompts in the Discovery Tab tab.
The operating elements of Meta AI also contain a History tab that shows previously used prompts. In addition, users can make their prompts private under data and privacy or delete them in the “Manage your information” section.
The Meta AI app also connects to the line of Meta AI-driven glasses, indicated by a glass icon at the bottom of the screen. For owners of the Metablazen, the app offers step -by -step instructions for linking the device.
“You are going to be able to use the app to manage your metatie vlases and other types of AI devices that we will build in the future,” said Zuckerberg. “This is the start of a long journey to expand this.”
I will have to do the word of Zuckerberg for that. I do not have meta glasses that start at $ 299, but if Meta wanted to borrow me a few, I would like to revise the integration with Meta AI.
Speech control
Although Meta AI is at first sight like any other large language model, the app is interesting and creepy the voice AI function.
Once enabled, the Ready to Talk function enables the mobile app to listen to assignments as soon as it opens. That is fine until you realize that the app does not stop listening after it answers your question. I had to tell the AI to stop before the microphone function was switched off.
Speech controls are accessible in addition to the profile photo of the user. Users can switch between the standard AI voice and famous voices, including Judi Dench, Kristen Bell, John Cena, Keegan-Michael Key and Awkwafina.
It was creepy when Meta rolled out the function for the first time in September 2024, and it is still scary, although he has the Kristen Bell of Veronica Mars because my AI assistant is pretty cool.
The “ready to talk” function opens the microphone when the app is started. An experimental full-duplex mode makes more natural, real-time conversations possible, although it has limitations, including outdated knowledge and limited access to certain functions.
Having the Meta AI app ready to listen is a double-edged sword. On the one hand it is very useful to be able to start talking immediately, while on the other hand, if you forget that the setting is switched on and starts to speak, the AI can assume that you are talking to the app.
Because the microphone quality on mobile phones differs per generation, whether your app can clearly hear you, will depend on how many random photos or conversations generates it, so you think you speak to it when you are not.
Memory
While AI models become more personal and remember what users tell them, such as Chatgpt, “Meta AI does not remember the conversations as standard.
However, this can be changed by instructing the AI to ‘remember this’, which then adds the memory to the app settings. Beaten memories can be viewed in the memory settings. Meta has not detailed how long user prompts are stored or how they can be used to train future models.
Last thoughts
The independent app offers a more intuitive experience than the earlier AI integrations of Meta in its social media platforms and functions in a similar way as mobile AI applications such as Chatgpt, Grok and Gemini.
Once involved, Meta AI responds and answers questions within a few seconds after asking questions.
The Meta AI app is very impressive for a free and open-source model, but it is not something that I would use every day. This is an app for people who spend a lot of time in the Meta ecosystem, but I don’t see anyone trying to do more than casual conversations at the moment.
It makes sense for dedicated meta users, although those who prefer more flexibility and privacy can frustrate.
