FIFA, the international football management body, is taking an important step in its web3 trip by announcing a new blockchain network that is compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM).
The update, published on April 30 via FIFA Collect FAQoutlines plans to migrate the NFT collection platform of the football body, FIFA Collect, from the Algorand Network to the upcoming own blockchain.
FIFA stated:
“After the migration, PERA, Defly and other portfolios-based portfolios will no longer be supported. Instead, you can connect to FIFA Collection Metamask or an EVM portion that supports WalletConnect.”
FIFA still has to confirm a fixed launch date, but insured users that further details will be released shortly. However, the migration has been planned for the time being no earlier than May 20.
With FIFA Collect, football fans can come into contact with sport via digital items that are linked to tournaments and exclusive experiences from practice. The platform also functions as a marketplace and recent updates introduced new collection bundles that offer tangible benefits, including VIP access to selected football events.
FIFAs EVM-compatible blockchain
The FIFA decision to adopt an EVM-compatible chain reflects a broader strategy to embrace decentralized technology and to increase the flexibility of the cross network.
According to FIFA, the initiative is a step towards enabling wallet interviewability and creating room for future innovation in the involvement of digital fans.
The continued that the coming platform will benefit from greater compatibility with large blockchain ecosystems and improved user functionality.
Moreover, the new blockchain offers faster performance, support for future functions and a more scalable basis for continuous development.
FIFA also stated that the general user experience of the upcoming blockchain platform will remain known, and users can expect gradual improvements as new tools and options are introduced.
In the meantime, FIFA said that it would soon share more technical details about the approaching blockchain network.
