Elon Musk has announced a new update for X, the social media platform that is previously known as Twitter. A new function, called Xchat, is now rolling out and offers private messages that are protected by what Musk calls ‘Bitcoin-style coding’.
He stated:
“All new Xchat is rolled out with coding, messages disappear and the possibility to send any type of file. Also audio/video calls.”
XChat replaces the standard direct messages from the platform with a more advanced system. It supports end-to-end coding, disappearing messages and sending different file types.
At the same time, users can initiate speech and video calls without linking a telephone number. This would be designed to work on different devices and operating systems.
Musk described XChat as a complete rebuilding, developed using the rust programming language. He emphasized that the coding model lends to concepts used in Bitcoin’s architecture, although he did not offer any technical details.
The movement reflects the ambition of Musk to transform X into a multifunctional platform that combines social networks, communication and financial services.
Last month, Musk confirmed that X would soon roll out a payment service in the beta mode. He said:
“In the first instance, this will be a very limited access beta. When the saving of people is involved, extreme care must be taken.”
This builds on X CEO Linda Yaccarin’s earlier explanation that X Money, a digital wallet service, is expected later this year. The platform works together with Visa, so that users can connect debit cards, send money and make peer-to-peer payments directly within the app.
Crypto-community spread over ‘Bitcoin-style’ coding
Musk’s reference to “Bitcoin style coding” has fueled the debate in the crypto room, whereby some developers claim that the expression is misleading.
Bitcoin -Kerne developer Luke Dashjr pushed back, entry That Bitcoin itself does not use coding and criticized the choice of rust for security -critical components. He noted:
“Bitcoin does not even use coding … Roest is also awake.”
On the other hand, Bitmex Research suggested Musk may refer to BIP-151, a proposal to encode data exchanged between Bitcoin nodes.
Meanwhile, Wei Dai from 1kx speculated That the reference could relate to Bitcoin’s peer-to-peer communication design. He said:
“” Bitcoin style “~ =” peer-to-peer “~ =” end-to-end. ” So ‘Bitcoin style coding’ means ‘end-to-end coding’.
Other experts be Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC), a mathematical method used in Bitcoin to generate and manage private keys as a possible explanation.
Despite the mixed reactions, XChat is now available in beta for some premium subscribers and it is generally seen as a direct challenge for privacy-oriented apps such as WhatsApp and Signal.
If successful, Xchat could mark an important step forward in Musk’s vision of a safe, all-in-one communication and financial hub.
