Decentralized Finance (Defi) on the Bitcoin -Blockchain may still be in its infancy compared to Ethereum, but Bitcoin Defi (BTCFI) will be safer and cheaper, said Crypto Analytics -Messari in a new report.
A central participant is Rootstock, one of the oldest Bitcoin Layer-2 projects, said crypto-analysis company Messari in his report “State of Rootstock”, published on Thursday.
Rootstock is now protected by 81% of Bitcoin’s total hashrate, which means that miners who take into account the amount that also approves transactions on the layer 2. The figure was only 56% before the onboard of foundry and Spiderpool, the largest and sixth largest mining pools, in February.
Messari also noted that transaction costs on Wortelstock are 95% cheaper than the average Bitcoin transaction and 55% cheaper than that on Ethereum.
Rootstock is one of the many projects that want to offer a greater use of Bitcoin by expanding the provision for Defi with smart contracts, engaged by “BitVMX”, a changed version of the BITVM programming language. Other prominent Bitcoin Layer-2 projects include piles and Bob (“Build on Bitcoin”).
The project has also connected to bridging protocollaagso to enable Rootstock-Native applications to connect to dozens of other block chains, including Ethereum and Solana. The momentum is the scene for the growing adoption of BTCFI during the rest of 2025, according to Messari.
“As BTCFI continues to grow, Rootstock is well positioned for broader acceptance by core upgrades such as a 60%reduction of transaction costs, in addition to continuing investments in construction education and incentive programs,” said Messari analyst Andrew Yang.
