The Australian federal police has started an investigation into a large crypto -scam, where fraudsters occurred as Binance representatives to cheat the locals.
In a joint rackThe AFP, National Anti-Scam Center and Binance Australia revealed that the scam was discovered by Operation Firestorm, a worldwide performance against digital fraud. They warned that more than 130 potential victims were all the target of the scheme.
Scammers suggested as Binance representatives and contacted victims with fake warnings, and claimed that their Binance accounts had been violated.
With the help of encrypted message platforms and SMS, the bad actors sent ‘spoofed’ messages that looked like they came from the official channels of Binance. These messages often appeared in existing Binance Chat -Threads, making them even more legitimate.
Victims received fake verification codes and a support number, so that they posed directly to scammers who posed as Binance representatives. Once during the call they were put under pressure to move their crypto to a so-called “trust wallet” actually controlled by the fraudsters.
By the time that victims realized that something was wrong, the funds were “transferred via a network of portfolios and money laundering, making attacks or recovery difficult,” the authorities said.
AFP commander Cybercrime Operations Graeme Marshall urged victims who may have transferred funds to the “so-called Trust wallet” to report the incident to their bank or crypto exchange and the police via report cyber.
“The AFP has worked closely with our NASC partners to ensure that all victims in Australia were quickly identified the target of these scammers and gave advice to protect their cryptocurrency accounts,” he added.
As one of the biggest names in Crypto, Binance has been a frequent target for scammers who want to exploit its users.
A warning from the Cyprus police in February 2025 emphasized a similar scam, in which fraudsters sent fake -SMS reports on unauthorized registrations on Binance accounts to mislead users to transfer their references.
In response to this, Binance is said to work on a new security function to help users detect SMS -Phishing -wang. However, details about the new function remain scarce.
