According to Salus, global trade in critical minerals, currently appreciated at around $ 500 billion, has a financing gap of around $ 2.5 trillion. The Defi platform hopes that bringing these assets into the Defi space will help tackle this financing gap.

“We work together with miners, financiers and buyers to re-design trade financing from the start,” says Trevor Skidmore, co-founder of Salus. “With smart contracts and stablecoins we can finance minerals at the source, on verifiable conditions, with real delivery and traceability built in.”
Apart from the current activities in Rwanda, Salus is expanding in other countries in Africa and Latin -America. With this push, the platform is planning to exceed $ 100 million in gross merchandise value by the end of 2025.

Growing demand for critical minerals
The launch of Salus comes in the midst of rising demand for critical minerals. According to the IEA, the demand for critical minerals needed for the energy transition away from fossil fuels will double by 2040. At the same time, the sector sees increased volatility due to disruptions caused by rates.
In this environment, the platform hopes that giving exposure of investors to this industry, without the need to possess mines, will help to bring in the capital that was missing so far.
