In short
- Guild Guild Games has launched a new publication division, YGG Play, aimed at casual, crypto-native titles that calls the “casual DEG” games.
- The first release, LOL Land, is a browser-based board game with Pudgy Penguins Community characters and offers token-based rewards.
- The game was only launched on the abstract chain of Pudgy Penguins and, according to YGG, has received more than 100,000 pre-registrations prior to release.
After watching for four years at Web3 games to find their audience, Yield Guild Games decided that the industry had to reconsider how players correspond to the kind of games they are actually: airy chaos, in a “casual the one” atmosphere.
Instead of chasing broad mainstream adoption, the Guild Protocol YGG Play launched a new game publication unit dedicated to games that embrace the Degen-Culture, with fun country, a game-based game explicitly designed for crypto-native players who live in the proverbial beamgins.
“People play casual games on their phones while commuting, waiting in line or taking a break,” said Gabby Dizon, co-founder of YGG, said Decrypt. “They do it for fun and rewards such as stripes, badges or collection objects. And they like to spend a lot of real money on those games.”
Through the years of setting up a foot at the ground of Web3 gamers by pioneering with the so-called “play-to-earn” movement from 2020, YGG has learned “What is fun, what works and what not” leads to “some very strong opinions about how the crypto market can best be served,” Dizon explained with a separate explanation. Decrypt.
The relocation represents a strategic shift for YGG from investing in web3 games to making it directly. Instead of focusing on regular gamers, the guild focuses on crypto-native users who trades Memecoins, Mint NFTs and speculative activities.
The new game, LOL Land, has four thematic boards, including Ygg City, Beach Day, Carnival and Ice World Wonderland, who present Pudgy Penguins IP with playable characters based on members of the community such as Aaron Teng and Rusk0f.
The game offers two different gameplay modes. Free Play offers unlimited roles without token rewards, while the Premium mode requires to earn roles to earn points for YGG -Tokens from a prize pool of $ 10 million.
The board game based on browser exceeded 100,000 pre-registrations before it launched exclusively on abstract chain, according to YGG.
For LOL Land, players “Ygg -tokens can earn and [you] Can she use to claim NFTs, “Dizon explained.
The game draws directly from Dizon’s experience in casual games and his experience in web3 gaming afterwards.
“Before I got into Crypto and founded Ygg, I was a game developer for a little more than 20 years,” Dizon shared with Decrypt. “I made a large part of my career casual games.”
Swords about mass market
The publication strategy deliberately focuses on crypto enthusiasts instead of trying to make traditional gamers on board. Dizon argues that this approach is tackling a disadvantaged market segment that is larger than hardcore web3 gaming.
“If you look at people who trade memecoins, mine NFTs or act on exchanges, these are people you can consider as possible players under the ‘casual DEG” label, “Dizon said.
Asked how he thinks that web3 games could last, Dizon, who claims to give preference to playing single-player RPGs like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33told Decrypt It is a matter of perseverance.
“I think web3 games can have a lasting impact on people,” he said. “It is difficult to make games in general. It is even harder to make games with new technology and find out what the right format is for that technology, for people to use it.
